SYMPTOM & VISION

Flashes and floaters

New flashes, many new floaters or a curtain/shadow in vision can require urgent assessment.

Flashes and floaters

What is this?

Floaters are dots, strands or shapes that move through vision. Flashes can occur when the vitreous pulls on the retina. This is often harmless, but new or suddenly increased symptoms need assessment.

Possible explanations

  • New floaters or flashes are often related to changes in the vitreous.
  • A retinal tear or detachment needs to be excluded when warning signs are present.
  • A curtain, shadow or significant loss of vision is urgent.

What may be assessed?

New symptoms may require a dilated retinal examination. Online simulations cannot rule out retinal problems.

When to seek urgent help

Seek same-day urgent assessment for a sudden increase, a dark curtain or shadow, blurred vision, eye pain, or symptoms after eye injury or surgery.
