SYMPTOM & VISION

Children and myopia

Progressive short-sightedness in children calls for regular review of vision and eye development.

Children and myopia

What is this?

Myopia (short-sightedness) mainly blurs distance vision and often starts in childhood. The prescription can increase as the eye grows.

Possible explanations

  • Children may not always recognise that their distance vision is blurred.
  • Squinting, moving closer to the board or screen, or a rapidly changing prescription can be reasons for a check.
  • More outdoor time is associated with a lower risk of developing myopia in children, but it does not replace eye care.

What may be assessed?

A child-friendly examination can assess visual acuity, refraction and eye health. Depending on age and the question, cycloplegic refraction by an appropriately qualified professional may be needed.

When to seek urgent help

If myopia is confirmed, the clinician can discuss whether standard correction is sufficient or whether myopia-management options are relevant.
