SYMPTOM & VISION

Blurred vision

Blurred vision can have many causes, from refractive error to changes in the eye.

Blurred vision

What is this?

Blurred vision can result from a refractive change, but it may also come from the ocular surface, lens, retina or other causes.

Possible explanations

  • A change in glasses prescription or astigmatism can be a simple explanation.
  • Dry eye can cause fluctuating clarity, especially during screen use.
  • Sudden or marked loss of vision can have another cause and needs prompt assessment.

What may be assessed?

An examination can check visual acuity and refraction and, depending on age and symptoms, assess eye pressure and eye health.

When to seek urgent help

Sudden loss of vision, a dark shadow, new flashes or severe eye pain are reasons not to wait for a routine appointment.
