OCT scan

Detailed cross-sectional images of structures in the eye

OCT scan

What is this?

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses light to create highly detailed cross-sectional images of structures such as the retina, macula and optic nerve. It is non-contact and provides structural information.

When can this test be useful?

  • OCT can help visualise changes in the retina, macula or optic nerve.
  • A scan must be interpreted together with symptoms and other examination findings.
  • A normal scan does not exclude every eye problem, and an abnormal scan is not automatically a diagnosis.

What can you expect?

We start with your reason for attending and relevant history, then perform only the measurements that fit the purpose of the visit. Findings and possible next steps are explained clearly.

What happens next?

The outcome may be reassuring, lead to follow-up, an updated correction or โ€” when needed โ€” advice to contact a GP or ophthalmologist.
