EYE CONDITION

Retinal detachment

Retinal detachment is an emergency. New flashes, many new floaters or a curtain/shadow in vision should be assessed urgently.

Retinal detachment

What is this?

Retinal detachment occurs when the light-sensitive retina separates from its normal position. It is an emergency because delay can lead to permanent vision loss.

Key points

  • A sudden shower of new floaters or flashes can be a warning sign.
  • A dark shadow or curtain in the visual field is an alarm symptom.
  • Risk can be higher with high myopia, eye injury, previous eye surgery or a previous detachment.

What may be assessed?

Suspected detachment needs prompt assessment of the retina, usually with pupil dilation. OCT or ultrasound may provide additional information in some situations.

What happens next?

Do not wait for a routine appointment or online test if these warning symptoms occur. Seek urgent eye care through the appropriate local pathway.

When to seek urgent help

For sudden or severe visual change, a dark shadow/curtain, severe eye pain or other warning symptoms: do not wait for an online test or routine appointment; seek appropriate urgent care.
