EYE CONDITION

Cataract

Cataract is clouding of the natural lens and can gradually cause blur, glare and reduced contrast.

Cataract

What is this?

Cataract develops when the natural lens of the eye becomes progressively cloudy, so light is no longer focused as clearly on the retina.

Key points

  • Vision may become gradually blurred or hazy.
  • Bright light, glare or halos may become more troublesome.
  • Colours and contrast can appear less vivid.

What may be assessed?

An eye examination can assess visual acuity, refraction and the clarity of the lens. Other eye structures may also be checked depending on your symptoms.

What happens next?

The impact on daily activities is discussed. If cataract is significantly limiting vision, referral for ophthalmology assessment may be appropriate.
