Macular degeneration

Macular degeneration affects the macula, the retinal area important for sharp central vision.

Macular degeneration

What is this?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the central part of the retina used for detailed straight-ahead vision.

Key points

  • Early AMD may cause little or no noticeable symptoms.
  • Later there may be central blur, distortion or a blank area in the centre of vision.
  • Straight lines that suddenly look wavy or bent are an important warning sign.

What may be assessed?

The retina and macula may be assessed with retinal examination, photography and OCT. An Amsler grid can help notice central distortion but cannot diagnose AMD.

What happens next?

New distortion or a rapid change in central vision should be assessed promptly. Treatment depends on the type and stage and belongs in specialist eye care.

When to seek urgent help

For sudden or severe visual change, a dark shadow/curtain, severe eye pain or other warning symptoms: do not wait for an online test or routine appointment; seek appropriate urgent care.
